Exploding
Poo
As
newborn parents of our newborn son we have a lot to
learn. After a few weeks you really believe that
you’ve got the hang of it already…NOT. So even
after 3 months we still come across small and big
‘problems’almost everyday. And I do know now that
we are at the beginning of things yet to come…..
Just
a couple of days ago I was breastfeeding my boy on the
sofa. He dozed of as he usually does. But all of a
sudden he woke up and started to turn and move and
stretch like crazy. Like he was stung by something.
Then as sudden he had started he stopped and calmed
down…for just 1 second…out of the blue a noise
like a small explosion followed by a load of poo in
his diaper, which turned into a hot balloon under
pressure. Okay, I thought, shit happens, so I decided
to change him as soon as he finishes drinking. A
couple of minutes later there I was bent over the
playpen ready to change my boy. A fresh diaper and
wipes ready to use, but it turned out far more serious
then that.
The moment
I opened his onesie it became clear to me that a
diaper has it’s limits too. The poo went onto his
back towards his neck. And it wasn’t just a bit but
quite a lot because it went through his onesie and his
t-shirt and onto the quilt in the playpen. Great!!!
Lucky me…poor boy! But mum’s…I discovered….are
equipped with a very-quick-problem-solving attitude.
So in no time I undressed him without making it any
worse for him. Then I carried my son at arm’s length
upstairs since he was covered in yellow poo. But the
next hurtle was to preparehis bath as quickly as I
could, leaving him for just a couple of seconds naked
in his crib. Hoping that he didn’t have more….When
he was finally soaking in his bath, he showed me his
irresistible smile. I melted…..but we had to finish
the feeding. So just a few minutes in the bath and of
to the dressing table. And there he was again a fresh
and sweet smelling boy……my boy. Finally we ended
up on the sofa again were we started unaware of what
had happend to us in the past 15 minutes.
So there
you go in not even 15 minutes I survived a yellow
stinking explosion, undressed, bathed and dressed my
beautiful 'innocent' son.

Getting
out of the door It
was the weekend and we were both having a the day off
and the weather was somehow very good. Most of the
time when the weekend is about to start, the weather
knows this and suddenly change overnight, but not
today. It was wonderful, bright blue skies and a soft
breeze. So we were going to make a nice trip. The plan
was to take just a litlle trip on our bikes. Just for
an hour or so, around the field and swing by the canal
to watch the boats pass. Our children love to wave at
the captains. But
this was easier said than done. First you have to make
sure that everybody has gone to the bathroom or has a
clean diaper. Then you have to take a litlle snack for
underways. And a drink, so a spoutcup with juice and a
juice box. All dissapear in a plastic bag. Let"s
not forget a clean diaper and baby wipes. It is now10
minutes later. We
discover that the children are not wearing the right
shoes, flip flops are not for cycling, highly
dangerous ( believe me I know)So I go upstairs
and search for the right shoes. Finally the kids are
ready, with the right shoes on.Then I realize we need
some sunblock, just to be sure. The sun is something
not to be taken lightly. So we have to put lotion on
the kids and then we are almost ready. The kids are
dressed with sunblock on with a snack and drinks. I
should say we are ready to go. But then the phone
rings just as we have the kids in their bike seats. I
take my child out of her seat again and open the door,
and run to the phone. I always go back for a ringing
phone, you never know if it might be important. (
really important, hospital important I mean) But it
was nothing this time. On my way out I grab my
sunglasses and take a glimps at the clock almost 30
minutes...have passed L.Ryder 04/.june

A
day's out It
had been the talk in our house for the last few days.
All we heard were "grrrr" and "hiiii-hiiiiiii"
( just in case you don't understand these are animal
sounds). My children are mad about animals and the
fact that we are going to the circus made them go
"wild". We had all kinds of "animals"going
through our house. Elephants and mice, ducks and
tigers. And
finally came the day of the circus, they were awake at
the crack of dawn. Mummy...is it today?? Yes , honey
it is today! This is the day we are going to the
circus. When
we set the first step on circus soil, they were
of...backstage. "we want to see the horses, geese,
elefants, seals, lions and tigers".Grrrgrrrr
And they ofcourse wanted to go on the kids attractions:
a merry-go-round, bouncing-castle, you know the stuff. When
the circus started, we sat down in the big tent and
had landed in a different world. Full with beautiful
women, very small men, white horses and women who can
fold themselves!! Bright lights and show costumes, a
couple who dance on a swing. You are taken into their
own world and it is fabulous. Like a tiny peep-hole,
just for a couple of hours you are allowed to look
through it.We gasped, we laughed and enjoyed. And
when I asked my children, Änd what did you
liked the most?" "The
Merry go round" What
can you do....love them even more L.Ryder __________________________________________________ 03/.may

I
see the world
I once heard
somebody say: "I see the world and the world sees
me".I do not remember who that was, or maybe it
was from a song ...
I think this is
how toddlers see the world. They see the world with
eyes wide open but somehow they think nobody sees them.(very
cute though) They strutt around, picking up everything
they can get their hands on, just because they can.
This reminds me
of an evening we had a few weeks ago at our friends
house. We, the four of us, were invited over to their
house to have a wonderful sunday dinner with them and
their kids. Our host, he had cooked a superb meal ( he
always does!) whilst we, his wife, their kids, our
kids, my husband and me were enjoying our food and
having a interesting conversation. And when all was
finished and we had eaten our last bite, the children
became restless. First ice cream and then the children
could go and play when we had our desert in peace and
we went on talking. Every now and then we were
interrupted by our toddler who came showing me this
nice beaded necklace. She had found it and for obvious
reasons, bright, shiny and beautiful, she loved it.
She kept putting the necklace "around"her
neck and strutted round, like she was saying:"
Look at me!!"
These things are
so typical, you don't teach them this, they just seem
to know instinctly how to use a necklace and where it
goes!!
Proud and happy
mom.

15th Older
but the same I
always said that when I have kids, I will not change.
I always saw those moms who almost changed overnight,
wearing sweats, bright colours as if you had to be a
big child yourself, and suddenly liking completely new
things. Where did those people go...So I vowed: I will
stay the same. I will not cut my hair so it will be
easy in the morning. I will not trade my semi
fashionable clothes for sweats. I will not be another
person because now I have children. Well,
I think I have managed that. Oké, so I don't go out
anymore, ofcourse exept every once in a while. ( like
a Chris Isaak Show) And maybe I go to bed early
because you have to get some sleep somehow and there
is no sleeping in anymore. And maybe I do the grocery
shopping once a week in the evening just to get a
break. And yes, I hear myself saying the same thing as
my mom did years ago. (Oops) And yes we do have a
house in the suburbs because it is nicer for the kids
to have a garden instead of city traffic. And yes, we
always eat a six sharp, because it's easier for the
children and therefor better for mom and dad. But
other than that I have't changed. Oké, maybe just a
bit. But
there is one thing that hasn't changed, me. I still
look the same, really I do and I still am the same.
Maybe a bit tired sometimes but I look the same. And I
still wear the same clothes as I always did. Same size
( almost), same style same me. Same me as always,
still different. I still love the same things, love
the same music, same books, have the same dreams... Hopefully
I will still look the same when I get up in the
morning. L.Ryder __________________________________________________ 01/.may

Cool, Cool Mom A
litlle while ago it was my lucky day: my husband had
bought me a ticket to the "Chris Isaak
Show". It was just a surprise, for no particular
reason at all and I love him for it. I had been a,
what they call "a fan" for many years and so
I was over the moon. Days went by quickly and finally
it was the day. I had been busy with my kids and so I
had to fly... It
was a wednesday that day and it was sunny with a cool
breeze when I stepped out of my car and walked, I
walked towards the music. So I went and I saw and I
loved, loved it madly. He really is a great guy with
some cool tunes that makes me believe I am living on a
beach somewhere. He has the gift of playing some real
music. As you might have noticed I really love Chris's
music, and have done so ever since he first started
about 20 years ago. This makes me all of a sudden
really old. Oke, yes I am not as young as I was before but you cannot tell ! Thanks to my mum and dad for
fabulous genes. After the show I met him and to speak
with the words of Chris Isaak himself, who shook my
hand and thanked me for being there: He told me to
"Stay Cool". Yes,
Chris, I will, I will stay Cool. Or at least I will do
my best. Thanks,
you too
